The Austrian and the Hungarian Societies of Pathologists have closed a conference which was held in Sopron for the first time with great success. Classic pathology and slide seminars with virtopsy and molecular oncological sessions were the main areas touched. On the first morning meetings were separated, and held in Hungarian and German, from the afternoon, the sections and discussions were in English. Awards and prices were given and social events made the meeting more memorable. Next year the Austrian, Croatian Hungarian and Slovenian society meets up in Graz, Austria.
At the Austro-Hungarian Pathology Congress, the three „best poster” awards were won by three young presenters from the Semmelweis University Budapest: Gergő Kiszner medical student, Tibor Füle scientist, and Zsuzsanna Baranyák medical student. This year, the Jellinek Award (founded by the Society of Hungarian Pathologists and the IAP Hungarian Division) was given in recognition of the best published paper in 2008 by a Ph.D. student. The winner is Katalin Dezső, Ph.D. student at the Semmelweis University Budapest Ph.D. School. Zsófia Balogh Ph.D. student at the Semmelweis University Budapest won the „best oral presentation” award.
On the first day of the Austro-Hungarian Pathology Confrence, we celebrated the 80th birthday of Professor Gábor Kendrey. Professor Éva Magyar, who organised the scientific session, unfortunately could not attend the meeting. Former colleagues of professor Kendrey gave scientific lectures, but all of them mentioned personal memories, their respect and affection. At last, Professor Kendrey greeted the audience with neat and wise sentences. This session was a very special, intimate and memorable part of the congress.
